Russian plane sets off for U.S. with virus help onboard - state TV

Pictures from Russian TV show a military transport plane bound for the United States readying for take-off.

On board, medical equipment and masks to help Washington fight coronavrius, state TV reported.

President Vladimir Putin offered Russian help in a phone call with President Trump on Monday, when the two leaders discussed responses to the virus.

The flight, organised by the Russian Defence Ministry, is likely to be unpopular with some of Trump's critics.

They've urged him to keep his distance from Putin, arguing that the Kremlin uses such aid as a geopolitical and propaganda tool. Something it denies.

The Kremlin told Russian media that Trump gratefully accepted the aid. And Trump himself has spoken enthusiastically about the Russian help.

Confirmed U.S. coronavirus cases have surged to 187,000 and nearly 3,900 people have already died there from COVID-19.

In Russia, where some doctors have questioned the figures, the official tally of confirmed cases is 2,337 -- with 17 deaths.
