Russian propagandists invent heroic bloodline for Surovikin

In a Telegram post on Nov. 18, Sladkov suggested Surovikin’s father Vladimir shot down three U.S. planes during the Korean War and ultimately died while steering his damaged aircraft away from residential buildings.
In Russia’s Ussuriysk, a memorial plaque was established in his honor. This fake fragment of the biography of Sergei Surovikin has already appeared in the Wikipedia article about him.

According to the journalists of Polygon.Media and Telegram channel Mojem Obyasnit, pilot Vladimir Surovikin, who died in 1966 in the Far East, has nothing to do with Gen. Sergey Surovikin.
The great-grandson of the pilot, Vladimir Mazich, said that his great-grandfather had no sons, but only a daughter – his grandmother. According to the man, their family doesn’t know who Sergei Surovikin is: “Perhaps there was a (bureaucratic) mistake in the Far East. We hope that this is a mistake.”

Vladimir Mazich added that he opposes a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. On Feb. 27, he wrote that he “respects Ukrainians for their spirit.”
“I beg you not to drag him [Vladimir Surovikin] into the war in Ukraine, which brought only grief and suffering to hundreds of thousands of people, and not to make his achievement an element of anyone’s ‘fanciful biography,’ Mazich said in a Facebook post.

Russian media outlet Meduza writes that a lie about the pilot’s supposed connection with General Surovikin first appeared even before Sladkov’s post. On Nov. 11, deputy of the Legislative Assembly of Primorsky Region, Alexander Zakharov, claimed that Surovikin was the son of pilot Vladimir Surovikin.
Reuters earlier reported that after Moscow’s retreat from Kherson – publicly announced by Surovikin – the general is under increasing pressure.
