Russian soldiers shot dead two civilians in the temporarily occupied village of Maslivka, Kherson Oblast, ASTRA Telegram channel reported on Nov. 17.

The bodies of 40-year-old Oleksandr Bondarenko and 49-year-old Iryna Baranova were found on Nov. 16, in their own home on Sadova Street.

According to neighbors, unidentified people in camouflage uniforms had entered the house earlier, but no valuables went missing.

Later, servicemen of the 12267 military unit of the Russian Federation, 34-year-old Vitaliy Filippov from Moscow Oblast and 34-year-old Andriy Safronov from the temporarily occupied part of Donetsk Oblast, were detained on suspicion of murder.

Both soldiers claimed that they were "drinking" alcohol with locals, after which they shot the unarmed Iryna and Oleksandr during the conflict.

According to the Charter of the International Military Tribunal, the killing and torture of civilians in the occupied territory is a war crime.

As of July 2023, the Office of the Prosecutor General has recorded more than 10,000 killings of Ukrainian civilians due to Russia's war against Ukraine.

During the 17 months of the invasion, the Russian military has killed almost as many Ukrainian civilians as the USSR lost soldiers during the 10 year-long war in Afghanistan, the prosecutors reported.

In total, Russians have committed more than 97,000 war crimes during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. So far, 383 suspects have been identified, of whom 220 have been charged and 54 have been sentenced in Ukrainian courts.

In October, the Clooney Foundation for Justice, a non-governmental organization founded by Amal and George Clooney, filed three cases with the German Federal Prosecutor's Office demanding an investigation into Russian war crimes committed in Ukraine.
