A blaze burst out at Russia's Soltsy air base in Novgorod Oblast, where Russia bases its Tu-22m3 strategic bombers, used in attacks on Ukrainian cities, including those on Lviv, Lutsk, and Dnipro on Aug. 15, as seen in photos that went viral on social media on Aug. 19. 

The pictures show clouds of smoke rising over the airfield.

The drone attack on the military airfield in Novgorod Oblast happened at about 10 a.m. on Aug. 19, announced Russia’s Defense Ministry. Efforts were taken to intercept the drone with small gun fire.

The Russian MoD admitted that one of its planes was damaged.

No victims were reported in the attack, the regional governor said, claiming that the situation was "calm and under control."

Soltsy air base is located about 650 km away from the border with Ukraine in Novgorod Oblast.
