Formed in August 2022, the Russian Volunteer Corps is a unit composed of volunteers from Russia who are fighting alongside the Ukrainian armed forces. The corps consists primarily of ethnic Russian emigrants who previously resided in Ukraine and other European countries.

On March 2, 2023, Russian propagandists disseminated a false story alleging the infiltration of a “Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group” into the territory of Bryansk Oblast.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine described these statements as “bold provocations.”

The propagandists and local authorities’ reports contained highly conflicting information regarding the “taking local residents hostage,” the presence of “injured and deceased individuals,” and an alleged “explosion at a power substation.”
