"The situation with the (threat of – ed.) encirclement is not new," he stated.

"They have been using this tactic against Avdiyivka since May. There were many different dates they set for the encirclement of Avdiyivka. The latest 'deadline' was March 1."

At the same time, the town remains under the Ukrainian flag, the official stressed.

According to Barbash, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have been holding the high ground around the town.

"This is what inflicts very heavy losses on the enemy on this axis, in the north. They are less active in the south of the town," he said.

The governor added that the invading forces were using everything they had at their disposal: air strikes, missile attacks, multiple rocket launchers, cannon artillery, mortars, as well as cluster and magnesium-based incendiary munitions.

"All that is being thrown into the town and positions around the town," he said.

The Armed Forces have warned the situation in the town might soon resemble that in Bakhmut.
