Russians told not to drink alcohol after COVID vaccinations

Shots, no chaser.

That’s the message Russian officials have for citizens who receive the Sputnik V vaccine for COVID-19, according to the Moscow Times.

The nation’s deputy prime minister Tatyana Golikova recommends that Russians who receive vaccines abstain from immunosuppressants like alcohol for 42 days. The Sputnik V vaccine is administered in two phases given 21 days apart.

Anna Popova, who heads Russia’s consumer watchdog agency, explained Golikova’s recommendation Tuesday.

“It’s a strain on the body,” she said. “If we want to stay healthy and have a strong immune response, don’t drink alcohol.”

It’s also recommended that Russians awaiting vaccination refrain from boozing in the two weeks leading up to the start of treatment. Smoking is also discouraged as it affects a person’s immune response.

Russian officials estimate 100,000 people have received the Sputnik V vaccine. The nation’s 44,000 COVID-19 fatalities makes for the world’s 10th highest pandemic death toll.

Russians are among the world’s biggest consumers of alcohol, according to the Moscow Times.
