Friends, family and community leaders gathered Friday at the Ralph Ellison Library, 2000 NE 23rd St, to honor an internationally recognized Oklahoman and graduate of Douglass High School: Dr. Ruth Joyce Colbert Barnes.

At the event, Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt proclaimed Nov. 11, 2023, as Dr. Ruth Joyce Colbert Barnes Day in the City of Oklahoma City.

As a child growing up in Oklahoma City, Barnes said she was committed to making the world better.

“Day after day, I wake up knowing and accepting the responsibility for the growth of my community. I am excited that my hometown has chosen to honor me.” said Barnes.

Dr. Ruth Joyce Colbert Barnes Foundation and the Oklahoma Sovereign Arts Foundation will also be honoring Barnes for her lifetime achievements at the 2023 Angel Awards on Nov. 11.
