Ruth Wilson's new BBC One detective drama The Woman in the Wall has released a first trailer.

The show, which co-stars Peaky Blinders' Daryl McCormack, examines the shocking legacy of Ireland's inhumane institutions known as The Magdalene Laundries through Wilson's character Lorna Brady.

The story focuses on Lorna, who wakes up to find a corpse of a woman in her house with no memory of who she is or whether she murdered her.

Lorna also suffers from sleepwalking, stemming from her time at the fictional Kilkinure Convent, where her daughter was cruelly taken away from her, and she is also pursued by Detective Colman Akande (McCormack), who is seemingly after her for an unrelated crime.

The first trailer gives a glimpse at the dark drama to come, as Lorna's voice whispers over a series of brief clips, including herself waking up in the middle of the road, as well as a letter revealing someone knows what happened to her child.

Speaking about the series previously, creator Joe Murtagh said he was "frustrated" that so few knew about the Laundries.

The writer added that he hoped to "shed some light on the awful things that occurred within these kind of institutions and introduce this history to the wider public, so that nothing like it may ever happen again".

Wilson herself said of the show: "Lorna Brady is a complex and fascinating character and I'm thrilled to help bring her to life.

"In The Woman in the Wall, Joe has created both an enthralling gothic thriller and a moving examination of the legacy of The Magdalene Laundries. It's a privilege to bring this story to screens."

The Woman in the Wall is coming soon to BBC One and iPlayer.
