Rutter's looks to challenge Wawa with expansion into the Philadelphia market

York-based Rutter’s celebrated 275 years of business in 2022, and this year it will be challenging Wawa and other convenience store chains by expanding into the Philadelphia, Delaware, Virginia and West Virginia markets.

According to a news release, Rutter’s has aggressive expansion plans with 50 new stores in five years planned throughout Pennsylvania and surrounding states. More than 10 of those sites are in Delaware and Virginia. The company currently has 82 stores across Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia.

In Pennsylvania, Rutter’s is looking to continue its expansion outside of the central part of the state, with new locations planned for near Philadelphia, to west of Pittsburgh and north of Altoona. As of now, the closest Rutter's to Philly are in Lancaster County.

“Thanks to our food service innovation, focus on industry leading wages, large breadth of offerings, and best-in-class customer experience, we find that our locations are the customer favorite in new and existing markets,” Rutter’s President and CEO Scott Hartman said.

According to the news release, the new stores will range from 10,000 to 12,000 square feet and will be on lots up to 25 acres in size. It was not immediately clear how close to Philadelphia the new stores will be. In addition to the store expansion, the news release said that Rutter's plans to invest $150 million in store remodeling and increasing alcohol and gaming offerings.
