Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday tapped Ryan Butler to become Indian River County’s Clerk of the Court and Comptroller to replace Jeff Smith who is retiring June 30.

What happened: Butler’s appointment begins July 1, according to a news release issued by DeSantis’ office. He's been serving as chief deputy clerk of the court since 2020 after spending almost 25 years as a state prosecutor under State Attorney Tom Bakkedahl and his predecessor, Bruce Colton.

Butler's reaction: Reached Friday, Butler, 53, thanked DeSantis "for trusting me with this position."

"It’s truly a great honor. Thank you also to Clerk Jeffrey Smith for his mentorship and support. I will be inheriting a tremendously talented staff that is the product of Jeff’s leadership and steady guidance," Butler said. "I look forward to continuing to serve the citizens of Indian River County and maintaining the great reputation of the Clerk and Comptroller’s Office."
