Ryanair makes up with Boeing, does huge jet order

STORY: Ryanair and Boeing have patched up a long and bitter quarrel over prices.

On Tuesday (May 9) the airline placed a huge order for new jets from the U.S. firm.

Ryanair will take 150 of Boeing’s 737 MAX 10, with options on another 150.

The deal is worth $40 billion at list prices, but airlines usually get big discounts when ordering in bulk.

Now Ryanair hopes the new planes will allow it to almost double its traffic to 300 million passengers per year.

The deal is also a huge boost for Boeing’s MAX family, which saw sales and production stop after two fatal crashes.

Ryanair had long been expected to place a big order, but had been locked in a dispute with Boeing over pricing.

Chief Executive Michael O’Leary broke off talks on a deal last year.

He also launched a barrage of criticism over prices and delays in delivering jets ordered earlier.

Now analysts will be scouring for clues to what price Ryanair actually paid.

They say Boeing won’t want to giver other airlines the idea that it caved in.

Ryanair shares were up 2% on Tuesday afternoon following news of the order.
