Rye freshman Emma Garcia headlines Pueblo-area girls at state golf championships

A Rye High School freshman stepped into the spotlight during the Class 3A state high school girls golf championships on Wednesday.

Emma Garcia finished in the top 20 at the Class 3A tournament at Broadlands Golf Course in Broomfield.

Garcia fired rounds of 98 and 94 for a 182 total to tie for 19th in the 84-player field. And Hyatt, a junior, wasn't far behind, finishing tied for 34th with rounds of 102 and 97 for a 195 total.

Freshman Jodi Griffin of Swallows Charter Academy was 50th at 205.

Sophomore Maddy Bante of St. Mary's Academy was the state medalist, firing a two-round total of 144.

St. Mary's Academy was the team champion with a 480 total, easily outdistancing runner-up Prospect Ridge (523) and Ken Denver (540).

In the Class 4A tournament at Tiara Rado Golf Course in Grand Junction, six Pueblo girls didn't fare as well.

South-Central League champion Sofia Contreras of Pueblo Central was the highest place-finisher of the six girls. The freshman finished tied for 47th with rounds of 102 and 98 for a 200 total.

Pueblo West senior Gianna Nardini tied for 55th with a 208 total, Pueblo County junior Alexis Roblek tied for 76th at 233, Pueblo East senior Gracie Soto was 78th with a 237 total, Pueblo County junior Samantha Hansen tied for 80th at 244 and Pueblo West sophomore Kylie Sergejev was 83rd at 267.

Erie freshman Hadley Ashton was the tournament medalist with a two-round total of 147.

Erie won the team title (480) followed by Mullen (494) and Discovery Canyon (497).
