Rylan Clark has shared examples of the homophobic abuse he has been subject to after releasing his latest documentary.

Homophobia, Football, and Me sees the TV host open up on his complicated relationship with the sport, as well as speak to others involved in football to address why it's not a "wholly welcoming place for gay men" and how homophobia impacts the sport.

Clark, raised a West Ham fan, speaks to former England star and football pundit Rio Ferdinand about his use of a homophobic slur live on BBC Radio 1 in 2006 and his changing attitude towards the LGBTQ+ community, as well as ex-Aston Villa and Germany midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger about coming out as a gay man.

Despite the subject matter of the documentary, Clark has been subject to homophobic abuse which he shared on his Instagram page in a bid to show why he created the show in the first place.

Posting a picture sitting in a football stadium, Clark shared a selection of the horrible comments he had received, blurring the usernames of the perpetrators.

"Thanks to everyone who watched last night. Here's a few comments from the promo videos that have been released from my documentary about homophobia in football. Just thought I'd highlight the reason why I was asked to front this show. Case closed," he wrote in the caption.

"I've blurred the usernames as to not encourage the same behaviour towards them. Thanks for all your great comments, and thanks to everyone involved in making the show."

The star was inundated with support, with fellow TV presenter Rav Wilding commenting: "I'm not going to 'like' this post because those comments are disgusting. You my friend are awesome. Keep pushing pal."

James Sutton, who plays John Paul McQueen in Hollyoaks, added: "So much love for you and so much respect for this project."

Meanwhile, earlier this month, Clark responded to fans' hopes that he would become a full-time host on This Morning as the show replaces Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby.

"I worked at This Morning for what, six years? And then I left and I got used to sleeping in and now it's so nice to be able to just pop in for a week, see everyone, have a lovely time, give away some money and then go home," he told Yahoo.

Rylan: Homophobia, Football and Me is available to stream on Discovery+.
