RZA Pens New Ice Cream Truck Jingle for Good Humor: Listen

RZA has penned a new ice cream truck jingle for the Good Humor ice cream company. The aim is to replace “Turkey in the Straw,” the American folk tune that provides the melody for the well known ice cream truck song; “Turkey in the Straw” also has a racist history, as it was often performed in minstrel shows. Hear RZA’s new jingle below.

“We wanted to make a melody that includes all community, that’s good for every driver, that’s good for every kid,” the Wu Tang Clan co-founder explained. “And I’m proud to say, for the first time in a long time, a new ice cream jingle will be made available to trucks all across the country, in perpetuity. That mean’s forever — like Wu-Tang’s forever. And I can assure you, this one is made with love.”

As far as getting RZA’s jingle to truck drivers, a Good Humor spokesperson told Pitchfork, “The brand is working with distributors to share educational materials with drivers, strongly encouraging them to discontinue their use of ‘Turkey in the Straw’ and advising them on how to use alternative options—including the new original jingle from RZA.”

The spokesperson continued, “Good Humor made the new jingle available to ice cream truck drivers nationwide (for use in perpetuity) starting this month through Nichols Electronics, the family-owned, Minneapolis-based manufacturer of ice cream truck music boxes and on GoodHumor.com/jingle.”
