Sabres get shut out at home with 45 shots against streaking Panthers

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Sabres set a franchise record with 45 scoreless shots on goal in Thursday night’s 4-0 loss against the Florida Panthers at KeyBank Center.

Having lost three of four on a homestand coming back from the all-star break, Buffalo (23-26-4) remained 10 points out of a wild-card playoff spot, while Florida pulled even with Boston atop the Eastern Conference standings with 74 points, 24 more than the Sabres.

With the Sabres scratching top goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonnen because of a lower-body injury, Eric Comrie stopped 27 of 30 shots in his first start in 10 weeks. The shutout loss was Buffalo’s fourth this season, and second on home ice.

Florida’s backup goaltender Anthony Stolarz made 45 saves for his seventh career shutout, as the Sabres had 14 more shots on goal than the Panthers.

The Sabres previous record for shots on goal in a shutout loss was 42 in a Feb. 12, 2013 game the Ottawa Senators won 2-0. It was the fourth time the Sabres have recorded at least 40 shots in a game without scoring.

Buffalo plays at Minnesota on Saturday before returning home to host Anaheim on Monday.
