Sacked Back To The Future Star Eric Stoltz's 'Fading Photo' Unearthed

As we – and Eric Stoltz – all know, Marty McFly was almost a completely different person.

Stoltz was famously axed from ‘Back To The Future’ during filming because things just weren’t working out.

And now, thanks to that internet (Reddit, specifically), the 'fading away’ picture that was shot with Stoltz now appears to have been unearthed.

In the first movie, Fox’s McFly is forever whipping out the picture of himself with brother Dave (Marc McClure) and sister Linda (Wendie Jo Sperber), finding that he’s slowly disappearing as events from the past slowly start to erase him from the present/future.

And this was the version that Stoltz would have found himself fading from, had he not faded from the movie altogether.

Interestingly, though they’re wearing the same clothes, the shot is entirely different to the one Fox appears in in the movie, rather than it being the same scene, just with the actors switched around.

Photoshop wouldn’t have come along for another three years, after all.

The story of Stoltz’s removal from the movie has been well-documented in recent years, but it gets no less painful to hear.

What was likely the young actor’s big break – following his top turn in Peter Bogdanovitch’s 'Mask’ – was wrenched from him four weeks into filming, when director Robert Zemeckis came to the awful realisation that he just wasn’t working out and he’d been terribly miscast.

Seemingly, Stoltz’ performance of Marty was dramatically sound, but lacking in the humour needed, with Fox’s McFly far more preferable.

Fox had been Zemeickis’s first choice, but was tied into his contract with the sitcom 'Family Ties’ at the time, so they’d gone with Stoltz over their other second choice, C. Thomas Howell.

But after Stoltz was ousted, Fox’s scheduled reopened, and a deal was struck to allow him to make 'Back To The Future’ and still stay on 'Family Ties’.

And the rest is history… or the future. Anyway.
