These are the Sacramento County intersections with the most alcohol-involved wrecks

Sacramento County averaged nearly three vehicle wrecks involving alcohol a day during 2021 and 2022, a rise from prior years, the latest state data show.

About 925 alcohol-involved car wrecks occurred in the county last year, and about 975 occurred in 2021. That’s higher than the average of 830 annual crashes during the previous eight years, according to California Highway Patrol Data researchers at UC Berkeley collected.

About 60 people died in alcohol-related crashes during each of the last two years, up from an average of around 50 deaths per year the eight years before.

The Bee isolated the nine intersections in the county that saw more than 10 alcohol-related car wrecks between 2013 and 2021. These intersections are all in relatively high-poverty areas with a lot of traffic. Many are near bars or stores that sell alcohol.

More than 75% of alcohol-related collisions at these intersections took place between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. The most common hour for wrecks at these intersections was between 9 p.m.and 10 p.m.

Alcohol-involved crashes at these intersections caused four deaths, including two pedestrians. They caused 157 injuries, including 16 severe injuries.

Editor’s Note: Shown below are accidents which took place within roughly 300 feet of an intersection where law enforcement officials noted that alcohol was involved in the crash. This excludes about 4% of alcohol-involved crashes that could not be pinpointed based on law enforcement information. Source: CHP via TIMS at UC Berkeley
