Boy, 2, dies after overdosing on drugs at south Sacramento home, sheriff says

A 2-year-old boy died Wednesday after ingesting narcotics and overdosing in his family’s south Sacramento home.

The incident unfolded about 9 a.m. at a home on the 3800 block of 44th Avenue near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in the Lemon Hill section of unincorporated Sacramento County, according to dispatch audio reviewed by The Sacramento Bee.

According to the audio provided by Broadcastify, Sacramento Fire Department medics and a dispatcher for the Sheriff’s Office said two of the deputies had responded to the home and administered Narcan to revive the boy, who had suffered cardiac arrest after ingesting what was suspected as oxycodone, a widely prescribed narcotic painkiller. Narcan is the first approved opioid overdose reversal medication.

Two doses of the nasal spray were dispensed, according to dispatch audio. All deputies, as well as Sacramento police officers, carry the medication while on duty.

The child was taken to UC Davis Medical Center said Capt. Justin Sylvia, a spokesman for the Fire Department.

Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Amar Gandhi said in an afternoon update that the boy had died, adding “There is nothing criminal suspected.”

According to the National Safety Council, the opioid category that includes oxycodone was involved in 12,133 preventable deaths in 2021, a 2% increase from 2020.
