Sacramento pop-up bar opens with mocktails and elevated appetizers for ‘Dry January’

A pop-up bar has set up shop inside a Sacramento plant store, serving a completely nonalcoholic menu filled with trendy drinks and small bites for ‘Dry January.’

The Teetotalist — Sacramento’s first alcohol-free bar and social club — is operating inside Propagate throughout the month at 1700 I St. in midtown. Drinks include $11 to $14 specialty mocktails, $7 wines, $6 canned drinks, $10 teas and $5 beers, according to an Instagram post.

Dry January is a popular challenge where people abstain from alcohol during the first month of the year.

The public health initiative was started in 2012 by British alcohol charity Alcohol Change UK, according to Harvard Health Publishing, and now garners millions of participants per year.

“Overall, The Teetotalist represents a growing trend towards more inclusive and mindful drinking culture, and has become a beloved fixture in the Sacramento community,” the pop-up bar wrote on its website.

Founded in 2022, the alcohol-free business plans to open a permanent brick-and-mortar sometime early this year.

Teetotalist representatives were not available or comment.

What’s on the menu?

The drink list ranges from a $5 beer to a $14 Folsom Prison Blues cocktail made with nonalcoholic bourbon, a hemp-based liquid and smoked syrup.

Sparkling wines are also available, as well as cannabidiol seltzers and sodas.

More drink options: an espresso martini, an old-fashioned and blooming tea.

The food menu — rosemary fried almonds, deviled eggs and citrus cured olives — was created by Notre Ferme, a Sacramento-based fine dining catering service.

Founder and Michelin-star chef Allyson Harvie has worked in several kitchens across the area including Corti Brothers in East Sacramento, Michelin-rated The Kitchen Restaurant in Upper Land Park and Ella Dining Room & Bar downtown, according to Notre Ferme’s wesbite.

“This limited-time collaboration is more than a culinary masterpiece,” Harvie, who is six years sober, wrote in an Instagram post, adding that it brings “something special” to Sacramento’s sober community.

This week’s events include a Mean Girls trivia night and a Taylor Swift takeover with a friendship bracelet station.

Teetotalist will open three days a week at Propagate throughout January. Business hours are from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., Thursday through Saturday. The pop-up will close for the day on Friday, Jan. 12, for a previously scheduled event, according to its website.
