Sacramento school district hires liaison to help with racism investigations

The Sacramento City Unified School District is working to address racism on its campuses through a brand-new liaison role, following two high-profile cases from last year. Last June, a seventh-grade teacher at Kit Carson International Academy was caught on video using a racial slur in front of her classroom. And in November, the same derogatory slur was found on West Campus High School, written multiple times near Vice Principal Dr. Elysse Versher’s parking spot. Those cases are still being looked into. But SCUSD hopes its race and equity liaison will help with those investigations. Attorney Mark T. Harris was chosen for the job. He has had a long history of handling social justice and civil rights issues in the greater Sacramento area. He told KCRA 3 he is ready to delve into the cases at hand.
