Sacramento target of false identification phone scam

(FOX40.COM) — The Sacramento Police Department is warning residents of a phone scam that seemingly reached the region.

According to police, scammers, posing as police officers are calling residents, sometimes altering their phone number to appear as the police department.

While on the phone the scammers will demand money in the form of gift cards or ask for personal information, passwords, account numbers and social security numbers.

The Sacramento Police Department wants to remind residents that they will never call looking for this information or seek payment over the phone.

For those who think they have been contacted by a scammer, the Sacramento Police Department asks that residents collect the name, badge number and what department they work in and report that information to police.
