New Sacramento tattoo removal promotes affordable treatment. Here’s how much it costs

New Skin Tattoo Removal, a San Jose nonprofit, is setting up a new shop in Sacramento, expanding its services to offer more affordable tattoo removals.

Its Sacramento location opened on Saturday at 8065 Elk Grove Florin Rd., Suite #150.

San Jose native Adam King founded New Skin in 2010. The organization focuses on providing low-cost tattoo removals to those formerly incarcerated so they can seek employment opportunities, change lifestyles and get back into society. It also has services to remove radiation marker tattoos on cancer survivors, gang-related tattoos and human trafficking markers.

The new addition of Sacramento makes three locations for New Skin, including a San Jose pop-up clinic.

“We’re only open once a month here in San Jose, but during that month we see almost 350 people in those two days,” said King, who is also a deputy probation officer for Santa Cruz County. “There’s such a huge demand. And the majority, I would say about 20% of those people, drive from Stockton, Sacramento to come to us to get a tattoo removal.”

Over the years, he said, people requested the organization to open a spot in Sacramento.

“Finally, this was a great opportunity for us,” he said about the new shop. “We found a great location. Everything aligned perfectly.”

Before launching his business, King worked with the Center for Employment Training, assisting individuals who were released from jail and prison with getting jobs. He was also a part of the Clean Slate Program in San Jose, which has an initiative for removing visible tattoos but only serves youth up to 25 years old.

“I came up with the idea that that’s great that we’re serving youth but we got to take care of the adults. There was no niche or anything out there for adults that they can get free or low-cost tattoo removals,” he said. “So that’s why I started New Skin Tattoo Removal.”

The organization also works with Santa Clara and Monterey counties’ juvenile halls to do tattoo removals for minors currently incarcerated.

How to schedule an appointment

The Sacramento spot will be open only one weekend a month from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Its next opening is Sept. 30 and Oct. 1.

It takes walk-ins but you can call or text 916-234-6916 to make an appointment.

Pricing

Individuals can get as many tattoos as they need removed, and prices are based on how long it takes.

For the Sacramento, it’s $100 for 3 minutes; $120 for 5 minutes; $240 for 10 minutes; $320 for 15 minutes. Some tattoos will require from three to 10 treatments for complete removal.

According to the Laser Skin Care Center, laser tattoo removals can range from $150 to $600 per treatment on average, and prices depend on factors such as tattoo size, skin tone, ink color and type of laser.

New Skin Tattoo has a price match guarantee if you text them a valid competitor’s price.

How do they remove tattoos?

Removals are non-invasive and non-surgical.

The organization uses an Astanza Duality laser to remove tattoos, which according to the website, allows for faster fading and fewer treatments.

“Laser tattoo removal works by sending specific wavelengths of light energy into the skin in extremely short and fast pulses,” according to the website. “Each pulse of the laser safely penetrates through the skin and targets the ink particles trapped in the dermal layer.”
