Sacramento resident Gina Miles, who grew up with a single father who DJ’d on the weekends, proved music is in her blood after winning Season 23 of “The Voice.”

Miles gave new coach Niall Horan, who rose to fame with the boy band One Direction, his first victory on “The Voice.” On Tuesday’s show, Horan ran on stage and hugged Miles after host Carson Daly announced her as the winner.

Earlier in the program, the 19-year-old champion sang Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind” with Horan. In other performances, Miles sang an outstanding version of “Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak and “Nothing Compares 2 U” by Irish singer Sinead O’Connor.

When Miles turned 14, she asked her father if she could get involved in his DJ gigs and began helping him set up his equipment, according to a representative for NBC. As a junior in high school, Miles moved to Sacramento from the small town of Paxton, Illinois, to live with her aunt and pursue a career in music.

Becoming a Season 23 Top 5 competitor was “a dream come true,” she wrote on her Instagram account May 16.

“Last night was insane,” Miles wrote. “How are you guys because I am still in shock. I hope it was as much fun for you guys as it was for me.”

She told KCRA that winning “The Voice” was the best experience of her life, and was thankful for the fans who voted for her.

“I genuinely did not do this to win, I just did it for the experience and the people,” she told the Sacramento NBC station. “And then they called my name, which was really crazy.”

Before the finale, Miles touched on her approach to the final show.

“I’m going to live it up no matter what happens because to me it’s not about winning it’s just about the experience as it’s come along,” she told People magazine. “For me, I never thought I would make it this far but I did.”
