These Sacramento utility customers can claim $15 to $8,000 from SMUD. Are you on the list?

Hundreds of customers with checks from Sacramento Municipal Utility District have until mid-December to claim their untouched money before it’s gone, according to a news release.

The utility, which provides power to Sacramento County and parts of Placer County, recently released a 47-page list of people and their residing city with uncashed checks dating back to September 2020 or earlier.

“Each year, SMUD posts this information to find the money’s rightful owner,” the utility wrote in a Nov. 3 release.

Unclaimed amounts range from roughly $15 to $8,000.

How do I claim my SMUD check?

If you or a member of your family is listed on the document, follow up with SMUD over the phone (916-732-7440) with the following information, according to the utility’s website:

  1. Claimant’s name

  2. Up-to-date address

  3. Phone number

  4. Address used between Oct. 1, 2019, and Sept. 30, 2020

Or

Mail a claim to Sacramento Municipal Utility District Unclaimed Monies at 6201 S Street, Mail Stop B352, Sacramento, CA 95817-1818.

Questions should be directed to 916-732-7440.

When will I get my SMUD check once it’s claimed?

Replacement checks will be released to the SMUD customer or their beneficiary upon evidence of death.

Remember: You or your family member’s name must be on the list of unclaimed checks. If not, you do not have a “valid claim,” SMUD wrote on its website.

It’s unclear how long it take to get the check once it’s claimed and a call to the utility company wasn’t answered.

What is the deadline to claim my SMUD money?

The deadline to call or make a claim for an uncashed check from SMUD is 5 p.m. on Dec. 18.

Unclaimed checks will then become SMUD property under California law.
