EMPORIA — The Sacred Heart Knights, looking for their seventh straight Class 2A state golf championship, are right where they want to be at the halfway point.

The Knights held a one-stroke lead over Hoxie after shooting a 318 as a team in the first round Monday at Emporia Municipal Golf Course.

With rain forecast for Tuesday, the Knights would be declared winners if the second round is washed out. Michael Matteucci's par putt on the 18th hole provided the first-round margin for Sacred Heart.

Walker Tuttle and Luke Newell both shot 76 in the first round to lead the Knights and are tied for third place behind Hoxie's Ashton Dowell who shot a 74. Ellinwood's Andrew Heinz is in second place with a 75.

Rounding out Sacred Heart's scores were Hunter Newell with an 82, Matteucci (84), Nate Elmore (85) and Max Ehrlich (87).

Weather permitting, Ehrlich will be the first to tee off for the Knights at 10:30 a.m., followed by Elmore at 10:40, Matteucci at 10:50, Hunter Newell at 11, Tuttle at 11:10 and Luke Newell at 11:20.
