Sacred Heart-Griffin, Pleasant Plains, Pana hoops: Who was the athlete of the week?

Sacred Heart-Griffin girls basketball Cheresse Mitchell ran away with the State Journal Register's athlete of the week.

Mitchel earned 82 percent of the 14,691 votes, beating out Pleasant Plains boys basketball player Zach Powell (6%). Full results are below.

Mitchel, a junior, had a pair of 3-pointers in the first half and scored 10 of her game-high 18 points before intermission in the Cyclones' 49-35 Central State Eight Conference win over Normal University on Tuesday.

The junior forward registered 20 points and 12 rebounds in Pleasant Plains' 61-28 victory over New Berlin to claim the Sangamon County Tournament title at Cass Gymnasium on Friday.

Kloe Froebe, Lincoln, girls basketball

The sophomore guard scored 15 of her game-high 35 points in the first quarter and led No. 4 state-ranked Lincoln to a 65-54 Apollo Conference win over No. 8 Mattoon on Friday. She was a perfect 8-for-8 at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.

Zack Hawkinson, Sacred Heart-Griffin, boys basketball

The junior forward posted 18 points and nine rebounds in a 58-25 victory over Jacksonville at the Bowl on Friday. SHG, ranked No. 6 in the Class 3A state poll, improved to 18-2 overall and 10-0 in the CS8.

Colin Schmitz, Pana, boys basketball

The senior guard converted 7 of 8 three throw attempts and totaled 17 points in Pana's 59-57 overtime win over Macon Meridian on Tuesday.

Trey Elliott, Jacksonville, wrestling

The senior wrestler is ranked No. 10 on the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association Class 2A state poll. But more importantly, he picked up his 100th career win on Wednesday against Rochester. In the Quincy Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Elliott went 3-0 in pool play then won the 145 title over Konnor Bush of Camp Point Central with a pin in 1 minute, 20 seconds. Elliott was 6-0 overall with five first-round pins and a win by injury default.

Emma Boggs, Niantic Sangamon Valley/Buffalo Tri-City, girls basketball

The freshman guard nailed a game-winning 3-pointer as time expired in regulation and the Storm defeated Mason City Illini Central 39-38 in a nonconference game on Thursday. It was Boggs' third 3-pointer of the fourth quarter and she finished with nine points. Tri-City trailed 25-23 entering the final period.
