‘This is a sad day’: Man killed in house fire in Belchertown

Fire officials are investigating the cause of a deadly house fire in Western Massachusetts.

“This is a sad day for them and our community,” said Belchertown Fire Chief John Ingram.

Belchertown Fire Department was called to a fire in the area of 42 Daniel Square just before 12:30 p.m. on Monday. Upon arrival, firefighters located a single-story home with heavy smoke venting through all windows and heavy fire showing in the rear.

Firefighters immediately began fighting the fire from the outside, then moved inside until conditions forced them from the building.

An adult male, the only person home at the time, was located deceased inside, officials said. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the exact cause and manner of his death.

“On behalf of the Belchertown Fire Department, I want to express our sincere condolences to the man’s family,” said Chief Ingram.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
