Welp, this is the way 2016 had to end — with a very, very sad meme.

Twitter user Jonny Sun started a meme challenge on Twitter that turned pretty dark pretty quickly.

Sun started by tweeting his own version of the meme, now lovingly referred to as "Sad Kermit."

Leading by example, Sun challenged his followers to imitate his efforts to create a "wholesome" meme using the picture of Kermit.

Never missing a chance for a challenge, Twitter users immediately stepped up to the plate with their takes on "Sad Kermit" memes — and what started as a wholesome challenge quickly took a dark, weird, existential turn.
