How safe is your home? Louisiana ranks high for home security, survey says

Louisiana homes are among some of the most secure in the country, according to a study published by one of the nation's largest home security firms.

Vivint released data from a survey of 1,847 households across all 50 states and information from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Based on its findings, Louisiana ranked sixth for the most secure homes.

The ranking was based on several factors, including whether survey respondents admitted to forgetting to lock their doors, whether they answer the door without checking to see who it is, the presence of outdoor cameras or deterrents, and how well-lit the exterior of the home is. The study also used property crime data from the FBI in making its rankings.

The five states ahead of Louisiana were Oklahoma, Idaho, Wyoming, Vermont and Indiana.

Louisiana ranked 14th for the percentage of people forgetting to lock their doors, according to the survey, with around 56% of Americans forgetting to lock their doors often.

The state with the lowest rate was Ohio with 28%. West Virginia and Vermont were tied for the most forgetful with 76%.

Louisiana was among the top of the rankings for having a well-lit house at night, having a fence around property, and having outdoor cameras around the home. Louisiana was around average for having indoor cameras and a home security system.

The state appeared to be on the lower end of the spectrum for having deterrents in place to discourage lurkers.

It may be surprising that Louisiana performed well on Vivint’s survey, considering it has one of the highest property crime rates in the U.S. Louisiana has around 2,884 property crimes per 100,000 residents – the second-highest rate among all U.S. states behind only Tennessee’s 2,943.
