Being a woman isn't always easy. Whether it's the gender pay gap, the stigma surrounding periods, or the perpetual sexual harassment so many women are subjected to, there are often difficulties to navigate and inequalities to battle through.

It goes without saying that some countries around the world offer a safer home to females than others, when it comes to a woman's likelihood of becoming victim of gendered crime such as sexual assault.

Recently, consultancy company New World Health released its 2019 Global Wealth Migration Review, which evaluates global wealth and how it's changing. Contained within the report was an index of the safest countries for women to live worldwide, because there's an acknowledged positive correlation between a country's potential for economic growth long-term and how safe they are for women.

The crimes against women measured for this section of the review include rape, trafficking, general assaults such as acid attacks, and slavery. And depressingly, the United Kingdom was not listed as one of the five safest countries for women in the world; nor did it emerge as even one of the safest in Europe.

Top five safe countries for women worldwide:

  1. Australia

  2. Malta

  3. Iceland

  4. New Zealand

  5. Canada

  2. Monaco

  3. Iceland

  4. Switzerland

In order to generate this information, analysts assessed crime data from each country, and measured results based on the percentage of each female population that had become victim to one of the crimes. It should be noted, however, that only 58 of the 195 countries worldwide were able to provide 'reasonably reliable crime statistics', and only countries with reliable data were eligible to rank within the top five.

But with the United Kingdom likely being one of the 58 reliable regions for statistics on crime, it reinforces further how the country is not deemed particularly safe for women. In fact, it was noted in the report that major cities such as London and Paris have become notably less safe for women over the past few years thanks to a rise in crime.
