Sturgis Safety Town camps set for July

The Sturgis Safety Town program returns in July with two camps for area students to learn about general safety through interactive scenarios.

The first camp will take place 9 a.m.-noon July 11-15, with the second camp scheduled for 9 a.m.-noon July 18-22. The camps are a cooperative initiative between Sturgis Public Schools and Sturgis Department of Public Safety.

A graduation ceremony will take place at the end of each program, and each student will receive their own certificate and camp T-shirt.

"Safety Town," located behind Wall Elementary at 702 E. Lafayette St., is a miniature mockup of the city of Sturgis, with crosswalks, roads, buildings, working stoplights and stop signs. Students learn about safety in five areas of instruction: 911 safety, bicycle safety, fire safety, electrical safety and bus safety.

Beverages and snacks are provided, with high school volunteers assisting the camp sessions.

Those with questions may contact officer Sam Watson, 269-659-1533 or samwatson@sturgisps.org.
