Former Borussia Dortmund players Nuri Sahin und Sven Bender started their new job as assistant coaches at the Bundesliga club on Tuesday.

Sahin and Bender are to help head coach Edin Terzic manage a turnaround after the team entered the winter break in fifth place, six points off the top four and 15 behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen.

Club leaders decided on December 21 to continue with Terzic but Sahin and Bender could now be options should the coach have to after at some stage.

Diagnosics were on Tuesday's agenda for the player after a two-week winter break. Dortmund then hold a week-long training can in Marbella, Spain, from Wednesday onwards.

Dortmund start the second part of the Bundesliga season on January 13 at Darmstadt.
