He said he was owed $220. Another man ended up in the hospital, police say

A Florida Keys man was flown to a mainland hospital Wednesday night after he was seriously injured in an attack by another man, Monroe County sheriff’s deputies say.

Ronald Chadwick Wood, 43, faces an aggravated battery charge, and on Thursday night remained in county jail on a $50,000 bond.

Several witnesses at Sombrero Beach in the Middle Keys city of Marathon told deputies they saw Wood punch the 63-year-old man while demanding money from him, according to a sheriff’s office press release.

Both Wood and the victim, who the sheriff’s office did not name, are homeless, the press release states.

Adam Linhardt, sheriff’s office spokesman, said deputies found the victim around 6 p.m. They said he had deep cuts to his head.

Medics flew him to Jackson South Medical Center in Kendall. His condition Thursday was not immediately known.

Deputies found Wood hiding in an empty lot a few hundred feet from where the attack happened, Linhardt said. According to the press release, Wood told deputies the man owed him $220.
