Saints claim Livingston County title

St. Mary's captured the Livingston County Tournament title in softball over the weekend with three wins in as many contests. Pontiac went 2-1 in play at the Rec-Plex.

The Saints (11-0) won in convincing fashion, including a 10-5 decision over Prairie Central in the final game. SMS spotted the Hawks four runs in the top of the first inning and then rallied with three straight innings of two runs each to take a 6-4 lead. A four-spot in the fourth pushed the advantage to 10-4. Prairie Central added a run in the fifth.

Bevin Brummel and McKenna Woodcock each had two hits and drove in a run to pace SMS. Izzy Hinz, Payton RogersAlexis Legner, Mallory Masching and Harper Francis had one hit apiece.

Rogers started and allowed four runs, but she got the win with three strikeouts in three innings. Brummel closed it out with three strikeouts in two innings of relief.

The Saints opened tourney play with an 18-0 drubbing of Flanagan. Courtney Krause and Hinz combined on a three-inning one-hitter.

Hinz, Rogers, Olivia Miller, Tiffany Legner, Woodcock, Francis and Brenna Burgess-Lang had one hit apiece.

St. Mary's topped Woodland 5-1 in the middle contest. Brummel went the distance for the win. She allowed three hits and fanned seven.

Brummel also homered in helping pace the offense. Alexis Legner had two hits while Krause, Hinz and Rogers added one safety each.

Pontiac Warriors

Pontiac dropped a 15-3 decision in its first game on Saturday. The Warriors were burned by 18 walks and five errors in taking the loss. PJHS collected six hits to the opponent's two.

The Warriors got on the board in the top of the first inning but trailed 8-1 when they came to bat in the second.

Ava Metz had a double, single and scored a run for PJHS. Carley Schneeman had a hit, scored a run and drove in two runs while Kennedy Abraham slapped a two-base hit. Rylie Stadler had a hit and scored a run Leah Wilson also singled and Syndel Hicks drove in a run.

Pontiac turned things around in its second game by posting a 10-0 shutout. Kira Johnson tossed a one-hitter while walking five and striking out 11.

Brinlee Dearth and Hicks each had two-run singles in the first inning to get the Warriors on the board.

Hicks had three hits and drove in three runs for PJHS. Dearth had a hit and drove in two runs while Schneeman had a hit and RBI. Celi Serna added a base knock.

Pontiac concluded its tourney play with a 5-3 won over Dwight, doing so in come-from-behind fashion. The Warriors trailed 3-2 after Dwight scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning.

A hit by pitch and a pair of walks loaded the bases with two outs for Kenzie Fetgatter. A passed ball allowed the tying run to score and Fetgatter plated the other two with a base hit to drive in the insurance runs.

Stadler had two hits and run batted in while Fetgatter had a hit and two RBIs for PJHS. Johnson and Schneeman each singled.

St. Mary's Saints

The Saints have been productive this week with wins Monday and Wednesday. SMS defeated Normal Epiphany twice on Monday by 9-3 and 7-0 scores.

SMS got off to a good start in the first game as it took a 6-1 lead through three innings. A three-run seventh capped the scoring in the road victory. Hinz had three base knocks, Brummel had a double, single and drove in two runs while Alexis Legner and Francis also had a double and single apiece. Woodcock tripled.

Brummel fanned seven in the circle for the win.

The Saints took the B game 7-0 in three innings. Burgess-Lang had two hits and Tiffany Legner and Carley Vitzthum had one hit apiece.

St. Mary's cruised past Odell 18-0 in the A game Wednesday. Rogers had a double and two runs batted in while Burgess-Lang, Alexis Legner, Masching, Tiffany Legner and Neveah Vogt had one hit apiece.

Brummel and Rogers pitched.

SMS took the B game 8-1. Tiffany Legner, Chloe Cox and Burgess-Lang each had two hits for the Saints. Vitzthum added a hit.

Pontiac Warriors

On Wednesday, Kira Johnson ended Pontiac's game with Fieldcrest by smacking a walk-off single to lift the Warriors to a 12-11 win over the Knights.

Fieldcrest had tied the game in the top of the seventh inning with six runs to make it 11-11. Rylie Stadler and Kenzie Fetgatter each walked and then advanced with Ava Metz at bat. One out later, Johnson singled to drive in Stadler with the game-ending run. Fetgatter also crossed the plate but the run did not count since the game was officially over with Stadler's tally.

PJHS trailed by a run before scoring seven in the last of the fifth inning to take an 11-5 lead.

Stadler had a homer and drove in three runs while Johnson had a double, single and two runs batted in for PJHS. Carley Schneeman also had two hits while Metz doubled and Brinlee Dearth singled.

Johnson struck out 14 in the circle for the win.

On Tuesday, Pontiac had built a big enough lead to withstand a rally from Prairie Central and hold on for a 10-7 win.

The Hawks scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning the cut a nine-run deficit to three. Johnson struck out 10 in picking up the win.

Metz had two hits and drove in four runs while Schneeman collected two hits and three RBIs. Johnson had a triple and single while Dearth, Fetgatter and Dallas Dopler each singled.

Pontiac Warriors

Pontiac got its offense going late as the Warriors whipped Reed-Custer 12-0 in junior high baseball Wednesday.

Cale Christenson was the beneficiary of the offensive output, but he did his own magic on the bump with a one-hit effort. He allowed the base hit to the leadoff batter in the bottom of the first inning and then retired the next 15 batters. He struck out six.

Pontiac gave Christenson the only run he really needed in the third, but tacked on four more in the fourth inning and capped the scoring with a seven-run outburst in the fifth frame.

Jackson Dukes registered three hits and drove in two runs, Ben Melchers had three hits and drove in a run and Drew Christensen also collected three base knocks. Josh Hartke had two hits and two RBIs while Wyatt Williams had two hits. Cale Christenson helped his cause with a hit and two runs batted in and Connor Shelton had a hit.

The Warriors lot 8-2 to Normal Metcalf Monday. A seven run third inning for the visitors proved devastating.

Williams had two hits and drove in a run for the Warriors. Melchers had two hits, including a double. Hartke, Drew Christensen and Dukes each singled.

Bryce Robison took the loss. Durham Fenton came on in relief and Melchers closed it out with eight punch outs.
