Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa tweeted the first photo of the reboot's Salem on Thursday:

The reboot will be based off of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, a graphic novel from Archie Comics. Aguirre-Sacasa is the chief creative officer of Archie Comics, and will write the script for the new Netflix series, as well as executive produce.

His version is deviating from the cheery 90's sitcom, starring Melissa Joan Hart, and will take a darker look at Sabrina's origin story. In the original sitcom, Salem is a grumpy 500-year-old witch who was sentenced to spend 100 years as a cat as punishment for trying to take over the world. His role in Aguirre-Sacasa's reboot is unclear, but in the comic, Salem does get to keep some of his magical powers.

No matter what his new role is, fans hope that Salem's character will be just as sassy and sarcastic as he was in the sitcom.
