A folk artist and historian from Sharon, Pennsylvania, will share the tale of a fallen gypsy during Salem Historical Society’s October meeting.

Carol Novose will discuss Gypsy Queen Lena Miller, who traveled to Sharon in May 1921 with the Wallis Brothers Circus. The 32-year-old mother of six, who appeared as a fortune teller, died in Pennsylvania of pneumonia and was buried in the local Oakwood Cemetery.

She was from a formidable Romany clan, and about 1,000 gypsies traveled in for her funeral, and local spectators brought the crowd to almost 5,000.

Lena Miller, the so-called Gypsy Queen whose grave is seen at Oakwood Cemetery in Sharon, Pennsylvania, will be the subject of a talk Oct. 10 at Salem Historical Society.
