Salem Public Library has announced it is expanding, adding a 2,200-square-foot building officials say will bring the opportunity for more services.

Work will begin on the new facility this summer. Expected to be completed late this summer, the building will house several existing library functions, provide a covered outdoor programming/meeting space, and serve as the future home for the library’s mobile services.

Officials said in a news release that adding the building is a key first step in the library’s future programming plans.

Also this summer, Sebring Public Library plans a cooking program that kicks off at 6:30 p.m. June 15.

“Best Cookout Ever” will feature local chefs. Join Chef J.R. Straley of Columbiana County Career and Technical Center, and learn to make some of his recipes. Sampling is included! Straley will start the series with a demonstration of grilling and smoking, utilizing value cuts of meat to save money without skimping on flavor. At 6:30 p.m. June 22, Straley will feature side dishes, from Mexican street corn to creating your own homemade dressings to pour over a grilled vegetable salad.

The final class, at 6:30 p.m. June 29, will feature “The Sweetest Things,” with Treg Steves, owner of Pondi’s Restaurant & Bar in Lisbon. Steves will present flavorful desserts such as a sweet and smoky griddled brown butter cake and beverages for your next cookout.

Registration is required for the programs at www.salempubliclibrary.org or 330-332-0042. This series is free and open to the public. Salem Public Library is at 821 E. State St. in Salem.
