Salem man dies following crash on Highway 22 near Rickreall

A Salem man died after a crash on Highway 22W in Polk County Thursday evening.

Troopers and SW Polk Fire District emergency crews responded to the crash near milepost 17, about a mile east of Rickreall, at about 5:54 p.m., according to dispatch records.

An investigation by Oregon State Police found James Dougherty, 83, of Salem, was driving a Toyota Avalon westbound in the eastbound lanes of Highway 22 when he struck an eastbound Honda Element head-on.

Both drivers were taken to a hospital with serious injuries where Dougherty later died, according to police.
