Saline County sheriff's deputy kills man while serving warrant

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is currently investigating a shooting involving a Saline County sheriff's deputy who shot and killed a man Friday night during service of an arrest warrant.

The KBI said preliminary information shows that at around 10:20 p.m. Friday, two deputies from the sheriff's office went to a residence at 2708 S. Holmes Road to serve an arrest warrant to Dustin Vance, 42, of Hoisington.

The warrant was issued through the Barton County District Court for charges of rape, aggravated criminal sodomy and contributing to a child's misconduct.

According to the KBI, the deputies approached the residence and met Vance, who had exited onto the porch and was armed with a holstered handgun. Vance did not comply with verbal commands from the deputies and drew his handgun, at which time one of the deputies fired multiple times and struck Vance.

Emergency medical service declared Vance dead at the residence.

The KBI said two other people were inside the home at the time and a 41-year-old Salina woman was near the porch and struck by one of the fired rounds. Deputies gave aid to the woman and EMS transported her to Salina Regional Health Center. As of Saturday afternoon, the woman was in stable condition and was expected to recover.

The sheriff's office requested investigative assistance from KBI at 10:50 p.m. Friday with agents and the crime scene response team reporting to the scene.

The KBI said it is conducting an ongoing, thorough and independent investigation on the incident. After the investigation is concluded, KBI will turn the findings over the Saline County Attorney for review.
