Salish Kootenai College honors class of '23

Jun. 15—The Joe McDonald Health and Fitness Center was packed with parents, relatives, and friends of graduates for Salish Kootenai College's commencement, held June 10 beginning at 11 a.m.

Yamncut drummed for the grand entry, and many graduates wore regalia and beaded mortarboards, lending a festive feel to graduation.

Carrie Billie, CEO and president of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium, delivered the commencement address and gave graduates a pat on the back and advice.

"Dream it," Billie said, stretching her arms out wide. "Then do it."

Janene Lichtenberg was honored as 2022-23 Faculty of the Year, and Dominique Laforge was Student of the Year. Nick Lefthand received an honorary degree, and Salish elder Johnny Arlee earned a Distinguished Service Award.

Then it was time for the diplomas. First came 25 graduates who earned a master's degree, followed by bachelor's degree, associate degrees and certificates of completion.

Chief Cliff drummed the graduates out for an afternoon of celebration, barbecues and family gatherings.
