Sally’s Apizza coming to Wethersfield, New Haven pizza legend’s rep and town official confirm

Sally’s Apizza, one of New Haven’s legendary pizza shops, is currently developing a location in Wethersfield, a company spokeswoman has confirmed.

Krystina Nataloni, Sally’s director of marketing, would not state an address. But Wethersfield town planner Peter Gillespie confirmed it is 1178 Silas Deane Highway, on the site of the newly constructed Borden Luxury Apartments.

“It was always part of the original plan to have a restaurant of some variety in there,” Gillespie said.

Martin Kenny of Lexington Partners, which developed the Borden building, would not comment on Sally’s.

The Wethersfield location will be the first Hartford-area outpost of the pizza shop, which has operated in the Wooster Square area of New Haven since 1938.

Sally’s announced in June that it planned to open a location at 66 Summer St. in Stamford, its first expansion outside of New Haven. Sally’s is currently developing a location in the SoNo collection in Norwalk, Nataloni confirmed.

In an email, Nataloni suggested possible further future expansion in the Capitol region. “We are in active discussions with several leading developers in the Greater Hartford area,” she wrote.

In the June news release announcing the Stamford expansion, Bob Consiglio, one of the sons of Sally’s original operator Sal Consiglio, said that in the new locations, “Sally’s is committed to using the same ingredients, recipes and techniques that my father developed in New Haven decades ago.”

The Borden opened in September 2020, with 150 residential units and commercial space on the first floor. Kenny said “98%” of the residential spaces are taken.

He added that a Keller Williams realty office currently occupies some of the first-floor commercial space, and an unnamed bakery-catering company is in talks to occupy another portion of that space.

Sally’s — along with its chief New Haven rivals Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napolitana and Modern — has consistently scored near the top in lists of the best pizza in the United States.

Frank Pepe began opening locations in other towns about 15 years ago. It currently has locations in Fairfield, Danbury, Manchester, West Harford, Waterbury and Mohegan Sun as well as shops in New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
