Sally Field Slams Amazing Spider-Man’s ‘Two Dimensional’ Aunt May

Sally Field, the actress who played Aunt May to Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker in the two ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ movies, has admitted she didn’t enjoy making the superhero films saying “it’s really hard to find a three-dimensional character in it”.

Speaking to Howard Stern while promoting ‘Hello, My Name Is Doris”, Field says she signed up for the franchise to work with the producer Laura Ziskin, who died in 2011 not long after making the first film.

Stern asked Field whether she enjoyed making ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ to which she replied, “Not especially, it’s not my kind of movie. But my friend Laura Ziskin was the producer and we knew it would be her last film.”

She says she didn’t have to put a “great deal” into playing Peter’s adoptive aunt because “it’s really hard to find a three dimensional character in it. You work it as much as you can but you can’t put 10-pounds of s*** in a 5-pound bag.”

She had nothing but praise though for Andrew Garfield, who was dropped from the role ahead of Spider-Man’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in ‘Captain America: Civil War’, calling him a “lovely, lovely actor” saying “we found a relationship, and who we were, so that was fun.”

She added: “It was just really for my friend and I loved being there for the people.”

The third film in the franchise was canned following the lukewarm critical response to ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2′ in 2014. Garfield appeared to blame the studio for cutting key scenes from the second film, telling the Daily Beast “certain people at the studio had problems with certain parts of it, and ultimately the studio is the final say in those movies because they’re the tentpoles, so you have to answer to those people.”

Sony Pictures, who produce the Spider-Man films, has since cut a deal with Marvel to allow them to integrate the character into the MCU. Sony’s next solo Spider-Man films starring Tom Holland as the web-slinger will hit cinemas in 2017 with Marisa Tomei rumoured to be playing Aunt May.
