Sally Ride Barbie and Rosa Parks Barbie dolls debut on Women's Equality Day

For Women's Equality Day, Mattel, the maker of America's most iconic doll, announced the addition of two role models to the Barbie Inspiring Women Series.

Barbie dolls of Civil Rights activist Rosa Parks and Sally Ride, the first American female astronaut, are now for sale at Barbie.com for $30.99 a piece.

Aug. 26 is the 99th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. According to a Mattel blog post, the series "pays tribute to incredible heroines – courageous women who paved the way for generations of girls to dream bigger than ever before."

The dolls were "sculpted in their likenesses of their real-life counterparts" with the Rosa Parks Barbie Doll wearing a floral dress under a wool coat.

The Sally Ride doll wears a blue flight suit and comes with a headset, and removable helmet with American flag and NASA logo details.

The series, which was announced in March 2018 ahead of International Women's Day, also has honored pioneering aviator Amelia Earhart; Katherine Johnson, the NASA mathematician who broke race and gender barriers; and renowned artist Frida Kahlo.

"Girls have always been able to play out different roles and careers with Barbie and we are thrilled to shine a light on real life role models to remind them that they can be anything," said Lisa McKnight, Barbie senior vice president and general manager, in a statement in 2018 when the collection was first announced.

The dolls come with educational information about the contributions each has made to society and their respective fields.
