Salma Hayek Shuts Down Troll Who Claims She Had 'Too Much' Botox

If you were planning on trying to take down Salma Hayek on Instagram, we’d advise you to reconsider. After the actress posted a stunning photo of herself on the beach to Instagram, a commenter decided to weigh in with their opinions on how Hayek’s face was looking, and the procedures they assumed were behind it. If they were hoping to make Hayek feel bad for even a second, it’s safe to say they failed.

Hayek’s snap shows the 53-year-old actress’s hair blowing in the wind, as palm trees and blue water stretch out behind her. “#wind #aire,” the Frida star wrote. Honestly, the only thing that should have come out of this Instagram post was commenters begging her to reveal her location, so we can all enjoy a beach as perfect as this one. But no, this is Instagram, where civility goes to die.

“Too much Botox :(,” one comment read. “Not needed Salma!” Luckily (or unluckily), Hayek saw this comment — and decided to take time out of her busy schedule to reply.

“I don’t have Botox,” the actress gently corrected. “But thanks for the advice because I was thinking maybe it’s time.”

She has a point — if the trolls are going to get on her case about altering her appearance, either way, might as well go for it, right? But seriously, the idea that anyone “needs” Botox needs to stay in the 2010s. Yes, Hayek is more or less flawless when it comes to her skin, hair, overall face shape, etc., and we can firmly say she doesn’t “need” Botox or any other enhancement. But by that same token, women who don’t look exactly like Salma Hayek don’t need it either.

A woman’s appearance is not something to be snapped back into shape the second it changes or turns into something new. In Hayek’s current position as a woman in the public eye, she’s damned if she does and damned if she doesn’t. If she does have visible wrinkles, you better believe someone will be ready to comment about her “not taking care of herself” or talking about how she “used to look.” And if she doesn’t have visible wrinkles, she’ll be just as harshly criticized for procedures it’s assumed she’s has done.

If Hayek thinks 53 is the age to start trying out Botox, more power to her. But until strangers stop thinking it’s appropriate to rule over what a celeb’s face “should” look like, it’s that much harder for women to disentangle what they’re doing for themselves, and what they’re doing to meet an unfair and unrealistic expectation.

Hayek’s joking clap back is a perfect rebuttal that shows she’s overtaking these kinds of comments seriously, and we applaud her — we know that drowning out all those voices isn’t easy to do.
