Salt and Light Veritas Christian event set for Oct. 6

On Oct. 6, more than 400 students, faculty members and parent volunteers of Veritas Christian Academy in Fletcher will participate in the annual “Salt and Light” Serve-a-thon.

According to a news release, Veritas’s Salt and Light event involves a day of service projects at different sites in Henderson and Buncombe counties. The students put their academics and agendas aside for the day to go show their support and care for the community.

This year, Adam Guice, vice president of  Veritas’s Parent Teacher Fellowship Organization and his team have put together another full agenda for the students involving projects both on and off campus.

“This service-oriented event is a highlight of our year," Guice, who is also the Salt and Light chairperson, said in the news release. "It is intentionally called ‘Salt and Light’ as we want others to see the light of Christ through those participating. Not only are we able to bless others in our community, but our students, faculty and parents get to receive a blessing from serving others.” Salt & Light Chairperson, Adam Guice, said. “We want our students to learn the value of community service, which includes on campus and off campus projects, allowing students to see the difference they could make by partnering with local, regional and international charities."

Alaina Meyer, a junior at Veritas, reflects on the opportunity to serve:

“Salt and Light is a wonderful time of year, where the smiling faces of Veritas students meet the service of our community,” Meyer said. “Whether visiting nursing homes to make crafts with or sing to residents, packing Operation Christmas Child boxes, or digging up sweet potatoes at a veterans’ farm, this day allows us to give our time and energy to share the love of Christ. It is a day of focusing on others’ needs, of living out part of our purpose as Christians. It is a day that glorifies the Lord.

"I remember a previous service day, we went to one of the  nursing homes. A very kind man lived there whose jovial manner and joy in children still make me smile to this day. He called himself ‘Bill Who Lives On A Hill.’ During my years participating in Salt and Light, this opportunity to love and positively impact others has been very special to me. There is nothing like the joy of giving as we look to some purpose higher than ourselves. We were created to serve the Lord, the Lord of love.”

This year Veritas students, ranging from age four to seventeen, will be volunteering for and serving at the following community organizations: Samaritan’s Purse, Advent Health, Trinity of Fairview Food Pantry, Calvary Food Pantry, THRIVE, Manna Food Bank, Eblen Charities, Western Correction Center for Women, Root Cause Farm, Veterans Healing Farm, Black Mountain Home for Children, The Family Place and Buncombe County’s Very Special Arts Festival.
