Saluting the Class of 2022: About 1,700 graduate from University of Alabama

Friends and family gathered Saturday morning in Tuscaloosa to celebrate fall graduation for the Class of 2022.

Around 1,700 students became University of Alabama graduates during fall commencement exercises at Coleman Coliseum.

The ceremonies, one at 8:30 a.m. and the other at 11 a.m., began with the degree candidates marching into the coliseum while "Pomp and Circumstance: March No. 1" played.

James T. Dalton, UA's executive vice president and provost, provided the welcome and Chapman Greer, faculty senate president, offered the greeting.

The Rev. T. Wade Langer Jr. of Bama Wesley gave the invocation. UA students Danielle Noletto and Bethany Knight Peppers performed the national anthem and UA's alma mater.

John Gullahorn of UA's National Alumni Association congratulated the students before they received their degrees.

UA President Stuart Bell conferred the degrees and Eugene O. "Doff" Procter III read each graduate's name.

UA's Class of 2022 honored Saturday included Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Bryce Young, linebacker Will Anderson Jr., who last week earned the Lombardi, Bronko Nagurski and Chuck Bednarik awards, and three students UA highlighted on its commencement website:

  • Emma Brown of Sparta, Tennessee, who overcame obstacles to earn a master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling

  • Derek Edwards of Huntsville, who earned a master’s degree while helping kickstart UA’s TikTok presence

  • UA Police Department Capt. Jeff Nabors, earned his bachelor’s degree in leadership studies through UA’s New College LifeTrack program.

The ceremonies honored graduates from the Capstone College of Nursing, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Communication and Information Sciences, the College of Community Health Sciences, the College of Education, the College of Engineering, the College of Human Environmental Sciences, the Culverhouse College of Business, the School of Law and the School of Social Work.
