The Salvation Army Family Store has a new home on West Dixon Boulevard.

In June the Salvation Army moved its retail store into a shopping center at 310 W. Dixon Bld., Shelby, where Save A Lot once was. The move puts the store in a space more than twice the size of its old location, and allows the Salvation Army to consolidate its social service offices and storefront into one building.

“We wanted to combine the two together. We were working at two different locations," said Kiley Beaver, office manager and bookkeeper for the Salvation Army. "The other part was it was just at the former location for our store it wasn’t working. It just made sense to go ahead and make that move to combine them."

Previously, Beaver said, anyone who would visit the Salvation Army's social service offices would be given a voucher to purchase items at the Salvation Army Store three miles away.

"The way it was set up, they were having to come to us at the office and then go to the store. If they are in need already, they do not need to worry about going to two different locations," she said.

Even with the offices and a food pantry taking up a portion of its new location, the retail space for the Salvation Army Store is roughly double what it was previously. The business still sells clothes for men, women and children, furniture and household goods.

In addition, Salvation Army's food pantry is still open 1 to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

The pantry operates on donations from the community, and Beaver said donations can be made any time the store is open.
