Salvation Army Reading Corps presents community awards

Nov. 1—The Salvation Army Reading Corps presented its awards during Tuesday's Advisory Board Annual Breakfast at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Reading.

Redner's Markets received the Spirit of Reading Award, and Mary Hart, a lifetime board member of the Salvation Army Reading Corps, received the Others Award.

The Spirit of Reading Award recognizes those who personify the spirit of service, selflessness, sacrifice and a deep desire to engage in the improvement of Reading and Berks County, officials said.

The Others Award honors an individual or organization exemplifying an extraordinary spirit of service to others. Consideration is given to those who exhibit exceptional service benefiting the Salvation Army and the community, officials said.

"The Salvation Army Reading Corp commemorates Redner's Markets and Mary Hart for their devotion to serve others, exemplifying the Salvation Army's mission to aid the less fortunate," said Maj. Darren Mudge, corps officer of the Reading Citadel Center. "Both recipients are excellent examples of community stewardship in the Reading community and embodiments of the Salvation Army's duty of doing the most good."

During the event, the corps also celebrated the kickoff of its annual Red Kettle holiday campaign.

Red Kettle proceeds will benefit underserved communities in Reading and help distribute toys, food, clothing and provide social service programs during the holidays and throughout the year.
