Sam Houston routs NM State 79-58 to hand Aggies a fourth straight defeat

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Lamar Wilkerson scored 25 points as Sam Houston never trailed and beat New Mexico State 79-58 on Thursday night at the Pan American Center.

Wilkerson was 8 of 12 shooting (7 for 8 from 3-point range) for the Bearkats (16-11, 9-3 Conference USA) and scored as many points (23) in the first half as NMSU’s entire team.

The first-place Bearkats secured a season sweep over the Aggies in the first season of NMSU head coach Jason Hooten’s tenure in Las Cruces, after moving over from Sam Houston last offseason.

Marcus Boykin was 3 of 8 shooting and 6 of 10 from the free throw line to add 13 points. Davon Barnes went 4 of 5 from the field to finish with 12 points.

The Aggies (11-16, 5-7) were led in scoring by Kaosi Ezeagu, who finished with 15 points and seven rebounds. The defeat was NMSU’s fourth consecutive loss, after a 5-3 start to CUSA play.

NMSU entered the night 11-1 at home, but the strong run of play at the Pan Am came to an end at the hands of the Bearkats. The Aggies are still winless away from home as well.

New Mexico State will look to bounce back on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Pan Am, as they host CUSA co-leader Louisiana Tech.
